Our current proposals provide an opportunity to deliver a residential-led proposal of high-quality design that is sympathetic to the immediate context of Tite Street and the Royal Hospital Conservation Area.

Our aspirations

  • Deliver a beautiful building that is sympathetic to local architecture and enhances the conservation area by replacing a negative contributor building.
  • Provide a community use at ground floor, activating the corner of Royal Hospital Road and Tite Street.
  • Provide up to 45 new homes, including family-sized homes.
  • Provide a new public garden accessed from Royal Hospital Road.
  • Deliver a new basement extension for the National Army Museum to showcase more exhibits and increase capacity for their outreach, both in Chelsea and the wider area.
  • Provide underground parking for residents, eliminating the need for additional parking on Tite Street and neighbouring roads.
  • Use high-quality materials so that the building references the existing homes and other buildings on Tite Street.

Landscaping

Prepared by internationally renowned landscape and garden designer Andy Sturgeon, winner of multiple awards at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, our landscaping proposals include two new public gardens; one accessed from Royal Hospital Road and another on Tite Street. The landscape strategy will be guided the following key principles:

  •  Enhancements to biodiversity.
  • A green and welcoming streetscape.
  • Playful detailing / heritage interpretation.
  • Sustainable drainage.
  • A robust tree planting strategy.

The Museum Garden

The new garden on Royal Hospital Road will be between the National Army Museum and 29 Tite Street and will sit above the basement extension of the National Army Museum. The basement will be designed to accommodate generous soil zones and new tree planting above.

Due to its location, the garden will be an ideal space for outdoor seating, spill-out from the National Army Museum’s café, and new planting, making this a pleasant space to enjoy for all.

Tite Street Garden

The existing brick wall will be removed providing an opportunity to open up the site and create a new publicly accessible garden on Tite Street.

The proposed buildings are set back to accommodate this new ‘pocket park’ with trees and species rich planting.

Opportunities to express the site’s unique heritage within the landscape details are currently being explored.

The National Army Museum

The Museum has been a permanent fixture of Chelsea since 1971 and continues to have close links to the local area.

Each year, the Museum hosts nearly 15,000 school children on free educational visits and in virtual classrooms, and over 5,000 families and young people have attended workshops. The Museum also provides a free weekly talk every Friday, accessible in person and online, to enable everyone to engage with the rich history of the Army.

To continue to enhance its impact as a national museum with a world-class collection, both in Chelsea and beyond, the Museum needs more exhibition space, which can be provided underground on the land that is currently their car park.

This new extension will incorporate a new gallery space that explores the Army’s role on a global stage, looking at the different environments in which soldiers fight, and a further space which science and technology have impacted and supported soldiers and their different roles. The additional space will also increase the capacity and learning provision of the Museum.

The extension will also include distinctive, multi-use spaces to support community events and activities. This encompasses the new public landscaped garden with external flexible events space, outdoor exhibition areas, potential spill out for the existing cafe, outdoor seating, and skylights that will bring natural light.
